Why Business Licensing Matters

Business licensing is more than a requirement—it’s a partnership between the City of Highfill and the business community.

  • Strengthen Local Growth: Licensing ensures fair, organized development and encourages a vibrant local economy.
  • Protect Consumers: Licensed businesses meet city standards for safety, health, and professionalism, building trust with customers and residents.
  • Stay Compliant: Proper licensing keeps your business in good standing with city ordinances and simplifies future renewals or expansions.

By maintaining your license, you help Highfill grow responsibly while protecting the community we all share.

Understand Your Zoning District

Before applying for a business license, confirm your property’s zoning district. Zoning determines how property can be used within city limits—helping maintain balance between residential neighborhoods, commercial centers, and industrial developments.

Knowing your zoning designation is essential because it ensures your business type is permitted at your location before you apply. This step can save time and prevent costly adjustments later in the process.

Highfill’s primary zoning districts include:

  • Residential (R): Areas designated for single-family homes and low-impact home-based businesses.
  • Commercial (C): Zones for retail shops, offices, restaurants, and service-based businesses.
  • Industrial (I): Properties suited for manufacturing, warehousing, and other large-scale or production-related operations.
  • Agricultural (A): Land reserved for farming, livestock, and rural-based enterprises.

If you’re unsure which district your property falls under, you can:

  1. Check the interactive Zoning Map for your address.
  2. Contact City Hall at (479) 248-1067 for assistance.
  3. Speak with the Planning and Code Enforcement Department for help determining whether your business type complies with local zoning requirements.

Tip: Confirming your zoning early ensures your business license application moves forward smoothly and without delay.
